10/18/2024, 12:52: Short story „The Gilded cage“, pp 149–177.

Second appearance of this mostly unknown Darth

1302 BBY welcome back, Darth Caldoth, old friend (just kidding, we just met the story before that one).
Darth Caldoth steals the Nightssister’s knowledge about reanimation. Angered by this the Nightsisters swear revenge. The first attempts fail and the last try is to project the thoughts of one Nightsister into Darth Caldoth’s mind. There she influences him to recruit Ry Nimbus as an apprentice (the one from „The Gaze of Stone“) that he kann kill him and set other traps which failed. The last idea is a ritual to gain full control of Darth Caldoth which fails as the Sith already knew about the presence of the Nifghtsisters and traps her in his mind.
What a fun read. This story does a thing Star Wars is very good in: take a character from a book and put it into another book. Darth Caldoth was created by Cavan Scott for the audio drama „Dooku: Jedi Lost“ released 15 months prior to this story and reused by Mann for these two interconnected stories.

Starting my reading of all canon Star Wars short stories and novels. The canon timeline starts with short stories of this book. The first two short stories are unfortunately only in the Galaxy’s Edge edition, which I do not own. I have to skip „The Silent Circle“ and „The Skiff & the Galleons“ because of this.

10/18/2024, 11:49: Short story „Vengeful Waves“, pp 39–52.

The story is set 2026 BBY and tells a story about two species the Nautolans and Anselmi sharing the planet Glee Anselm.
It is a story about greed, sharing, taking more than belongs to you and how the ocean spirits restore balance between the two.
I found it rather boring and if this would be my first Star Wars read I would never ever again read any Star Wars.

10/19/2024, 12:28: „Short story „Gaze of Stone“, pp 97–116.

First mention of a Darth mostly unknown even to Star Wars fans

„Gaze of Stone“ is set on Moraband (earlier known as Korriban) in 1032 BBY and tells how the Sith Ry Nymbis, the apprentice of Darth Caldoth, turned to stone and how the reception of this statue changed through the time: from a warning to not deceive your master pilgrims in search of forbidden knowledge imagined that this Twi’lek who got a statue must have done great deeds.
Nice read for me and a much better start to the timeline than „Vengeful Waves“

Next thing to read is „The Gilded Cage“ from Star Wars Dark Legends by George Mann.
